Apparently he was making his way home through the woods on a cold winter night and was struck by the beauty of the snow covered evergreens. Later on when he was transferred to Oberndorf he convinced musician Franz Gruber to put it to music and the song was sung for the first time in St. Nicholas Church, and one of the best loved songs in the history of humanity was born on that Christmas Eve of 1818.<br /><br />German immigrant August Imgard is credited with having used the candy cane to decorate his Christmas tree while he lived in Wooster, Ohio. It is an old German tradition to decorate the tree with eatables such as apples, candies etc., and Imgard probably held fast to his Christmas traditions in his adopted country as well.
