Christmas Was Born in Germany
Christmas Was Born in Germany

Christmas and its traditions have come to be taken for granted.

Christmas Tree Oh Christmas Tree Luther King is credited with having come up with the fabulous idea of decorating a tree with candles to show the spirit of Christmas. Apparently he was making his way home through the woods on a cold winter night and was struck by the beauty of the snow covered evergreens. He was not one to let that pass for on coming home he replicated the scene in his own living room, and the first Christmas tree was born. From such serene beginnings the humble tree has grown to be the center of attraction in monster malls in the Middle East, decorated with diamond jewelry.

Did you know that this famous Christmas Carol was written by Joseph Mohr in German when he was a novice priest in Austria in 1816? Later on when he was transferred to Oberndorf he convinced musician Franz Gruber to put it to music and the song was sung for the first time in St. Nicholas Church, and one of the best loved songs in the history of humanity was born on that Christmas Eve of 1818.

German immigrant August Imgard is credited with having used the candy cane to decorate his Christmas tree while he lived in Wooster, Ohio. It is an old German tradition to decorate the tree with eatables such as apples, candies etc., and Imgard probably held fast to his Christmas traditions in his adopted country as well.
