DIY Gothic Anime Makeup and Fashion Tips

DIY Gothic Anime Makeup and Fashion Tips

Style fusion at its most twisted, Japanese gothic fashion draws inspiration from a variety of influences, blending the beauty of anime art with the opulent macabre. This pop culture grab bag of trends includes elements of Victoriana, clubwear, classic mythology, punk rebellion, mystery and a touch of the supernatural. A purely aesthetic style that retains none of the controversy associated with its Western equivalent, these looks err more on the side of beautiful, adorable and theatrical than incendiary.

Gothic Anime Clothing

Mix and match different fashion aesthetics to create a visually interesting style of your own. Blend modern with vintage, cyberpunk with Victorian, classic kimono with Renaissance or even Rococo with childlike innocence.

Step 2

Select a theme or central concept for inspiration. Coordinate an outfit around thematic elements like vampires, dolls, pirates, the circus and literary classics like Alice in Wonderland. Themes arent required but can help guide the direction of the outfit.

Step 4

Select an unusual color palette. Go traditional with all muted colors, all brights or all neons. Boldly mix unconventional shades together. Pair black with pastels or white with bold electric hues.

Go wild with layering. Wear a long T shirt or dress beneath a blouse and sweater, a tulle skirt beneath a shorter cotton skirt, a jacket and even socks of different lengths.

Step 6

Go big with accessories. Make a statement with platform or Victorian boots, a corset, lace gloves, printed tights, a capelet, hair ornaments, chunky jewelry or a top hat. Mix and match as many accessories as you like.

Gothic Anime Makeup

Match the makeup to your outfit. For a sweet, soft gothic look, go light on makeup. For a punk or theatrical look, channel kabuki and go heavy.

Step 2

Create as smooth a complexion as possible. Apply makeup primer all over the face with a makeup sponge, then add a layer of foundation that is a few shades lighter than your natural shade. For a dramatic look, go many shades lighter or even pure white. Cover any blemishes with a dab of concealer, then pat finishing powder all over the face to set the makeup.

Step 3

Exaggerate the size of your eyes with black liquid eyeliner. Draw a smooth, thick line across the upper lashes and extend it past the outside corner of the eye, into a heavy wing. Draw a thin line of eyeliner 1/4 inch below the lower lash line and connect it to the upper wing. Fill in the space between the lower line and the waterline with a white eye pencil. Add false lashes to the black lines and wear circle contact lenses to complete the effect.

Step 4

Draw just outside the upper lip line with lip pencil to exaggerate fullness. Fill the rest of the lips with liner, then apply lipstick and gloss for a polished look. For a cute, pouty effect, leave the lip corners untouched by color to reduce the width.
